Build a Horse Barn Craft: A Fun and Easy Project for Kids

How to build your own horse barn out of a box
Creating your own horse barn out of a box is a delightful craft project that kids will love. Using common household items, you can easily construct a barn that’s perfect for playtime with Breyer horses or plush ponies.
Gather Your Materials
- A medium sized shipping box
- Box cutters
- Scissors
- Paint
- Pencil
- Duct Tape
Plan Your Stable
Decide where your windows, doors, stalls, and tack room will go on your cardboard box. Draw the outline of these shapes in pencil so you can erase them if you need to. We went over the pencil lines with a Sharpie marker to make them easier to see.
Trace along the top flaps at an angle to create the roof line. Leave an open area along the top of the roof so you can still reach into the barn from above.
Cut out the Windows, Doors, and Roof Line
With the help of an adult, use box cutters and scissors to cut along your lines to create the windows, doors, and roof.
Paint the boxes
We chose white and black paint, but any color will do. Be creative!
Apply Duct Tape
Once the paint dries, use duct tape along the corners, windows, doors, and roof to add detail. There are so many fun colors of duct tape you can use. We covered the roofs in duct tape to make them look like metal.
That’s it! This is a fun horsey project to create that can be played with over and over.
The final design looks so cute!
Hope you enjoy this craft project! Tag your creations with #theponyislandcrafts so we can see your creations!

Rudy the Rudster Book Series
My almost eight year old daughter and I have both enjoyed reading the Rudy series together. We are both impressed with how Diane tells the story from her horse’s perspective while keeping the reader engaged. The books educate kids and adults about houses and horsemanship along the way. The Rudy Book Series and Allpony have similar goals in this regard and I was thrilled when Diane asked me to create a custom Rudy plush horse for her book tour!
