Welcome to the Barn
Get to Know Horse Barns
A horse barn is much more than a building where horses sleep. It’s a busy place where horses are cared for every day.
At a barn, horses:
• Eat and drink
• Rest in their stalls
• Get groomed and tacked
• Train or play outside
• Meet helpers like vets and farriers
A barn is a horse’s home and also a workplace for the people who care for them.
Important Areas You’ll See
Every barn looks a little different, but most have the same key spaces:

Aisleway
The hallway where horses walk in and out of stalls.
Be sure to keep it clear of clutter.

Stalls
Horses’ private rooms.
Make sure you ask before entering or petting.

Tack Room
Saddles, bridles, helmets, and equipment are stored here.
Ask permission to touch or borrow anything.

Wash Rack or Grooming Area
Where horses are brushed and bathed.
Sweep up after yourself and put things back where you found them.

Paddocks or Pasture
Outdoor areas where horses relax, eat grass, and move freely.
Never enter a field without an adult.

Feed Room
Where hay, grain, and supplements are kept.
Strictly off-limits to visitors.
Your Role as a Visitor
Everyone is busy, and everyone has a job that keeps horses happy and healthy.
Being in a barn means you’re part of the team, even if you’re just watching.
Your job is to:
• Move calmly and quietly
• Be aware of your surroundings
• Follow directions the first time
• Treat people, animals, and spaces with respect and kindness
