What Is a Gait?

What Are Horse Gaits?

A gait is the way a horse moves its legs in a repeating pattern. Every gait has its own rhythm, speed, and feeling.

Think of a gait like a song:

  • Some songs are slow and peaceful.
  • Some are bouncy.
  • Some are fast and exciting!

Each gait has a different “beat” or rythm.

Gaits help horses:

  • Travel long distances comfortably
  • Communicate how they feel
  • Balance their bodies
  • Change speed safely
  • Show their personality

Pepper, for example, has a graceful, floating trot because of her dressage background. Toby has a silly, bouncy trot because… well… Toby is Toby!

Horses Change Gaits Naturally

When moving freely in the pasture, horses switch gaits when they:

  • Want to speed up
  • Need more balance
  • Are excited or playful
  • Need to slow down
  • Feel calmer or more focused
