Rhythm & Tempo
What Is Rhythm?
Rhythm is the pattern of steps a horse makes as it moves. Just like music has beats, horse gaits have beats too:
Walk → 4 beats
Trot → 2 beats
Canter → 3 beats

Pepper’s rhythm is calm, steady, and elegant—just like her personality.
What Is Tempo?
Tempo is the speed of the beat in a horse’s movement.
Every horse gait has a beat — just like music. Tempo tells us how fast or slow that beat happens.
Think of it this way:
• A slow song has a slow tempo
• A fast song has a fast tempo
Horses move the same way!
Why Are Some Horses Fast While Others Are Slow?
Just like people, horses have different natural speeds because of:
- Their breed
- Their age
- Their training
- Their body shape
- Their energy level
- Their temperament

Toby moves quickly when he’s motivated — especially if snacks are involved.

Rosie moves softly because she’s gentle and careful.

Catch likes to zip around because he’s curious and spirited.
And Pepper?
Pepper moves thoughtfully and smoothly because she’s had a lifetime of training that teaches balance—not speed.
