Safety in the Barn
Dress for the Activity
Safety starts before you ever step inside a horse stable.
Remember to wear:

Closed-Toe Shoes
Boots or sturdy sneakers helps protect your feet if a horse steps on you.

Proper Attire
No loose scarves, dangling jewelry, or oversized clothing that could get caught. Long hair should be braided or tied back.

Wear a Helmet
Always wear long pants and an ASTM approved riding helmet if getting on a horse.
Where to Walk (and NOT to Walk)
A barn aisle is like a busy hallway for horses and people.
Remember to always stay:
Clear of doorways where horses enter and exit
To one side of the aisle, never in the center
Out of cross-ties (grooming areas and wash stalls) unless invited in by an adult
Away from tractors, wheelbarrows, and tools
Never:
Run or weave between horses
Cut behind a horse or surprise one from the side
Block someone leading a horse
Keep in Mind…
The barn owner may ask you (or your parent) to sign a release form when you first visit the barn. This protects the barn owner in case someone gets hurt on their property.
Follow the Rules of the Barn You’re In
Every barn has its own system and each one is a little different.
Most barns will have the rules posted in the aisle or near the tack room. Be sure you read over the rules and understand what is expected of you while you are there.
You might see rules about:
• Where helmets must be worn
• When horses are fed
• Which aisles are one-way
• Visiting hours
• Where dogs or siblings may go
Pay attention, watch what others do, and ask if you aren’t sure.
