Looking at Gray Horses
Gray horses start life as one of the three main coat colors:
Bay, Chestnut, or Black
As the horse grows older, the gray pattern slowly changes the coat.
That’s why gray horses can look:
- Dark when they are young
- Lighter as they get older
- White, speckled, or mixed later on
But underneath the gray, the horse began as one of the three main colors.

Gray horse coat colors change as they grow older:
Gray horses are born dark and slowly get lighter as they age. Their coat can range from dark steel gray to almost white, though pure white horses are very rare.
