What Is a Gait?
What Are Horse Gaits?
A gait is the way a horse moves its legs in a repeating pattern. Every gait has its own rhythm, speed, and feeling.
Think of a gait like a song:
- Some songs are slow and peaceful.
- Some are bouncy.
- Some are fast and exciting!
Each gait has a different “beat” or rythm.
Gaits help horses:
- Travel long distances comfortably
- Communicate how they feel
- Balance their bodies
- Change speed safely
- Show their personality
Pepper, for example, has a graceful, floating trot because of her dressage background. Toby has a silly, bouncy trot because… well… Toby is Toby!
Horses Change Gaits Naturally
When moving freely in the pasture, horses switch gaits when they:
- Want to speed up
- Need more balance
- Are excited or playful
- Need to slow down
- Feel calmer or more focused
Horse Gaits Include:

Walk

Trot

Canter

Gallop
Now let’s explore each gait one by one—starting with the calmest gait of all: the walk.
